Palakkad, which lies at the foot of the Western Ghats, the dreamy land of misty monuments with its ever green tropical forests, dams, wild life sanctuaries, rivers, rare birds and animals, historical monuments, places of worship and traditional Ayurvedic treatment centers, has tremendous scope and immense potential to become one of the best tourist and industrial investment destinations in the country.

The district is gifted with the beauty of virgin and verdant Nelliampathy hills, the precious and unique Silent Valley, National Park, the famous Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, Attapady hills and more than half a dozen dams like Malampuzha, Mangalam, Pothundi, Kanjirapuzha, Siruvani and Parambikulam.

Palakkad the headquarters of Palakkad District is a charming and idyllic town buffeted by dry and dusty winds on the day only to be palmed off by the cool breeze of the night.  Blessed with natural bounties, the charm of Palakkad is its sequestered residential amenity.  The process of urbanization has not yet destroyed the rustic elegance of this historic town.

The town is a synthesis of three distinct strands of culture, purely Keralian, purely Tamilian and harmonious blending of the two.  There are many places of worships, and is known for the extreme religious tolerance of the people.  A few to mention are the Kalpathy Sree Viswanatha Swamy Temple where an annual car festival is being celebrated attracting thousands of people; the Jain Temple, the Roman Catholic Church built by Dr. Barden, Bishop of Coimbatore in 1862 etc.

Palakkad has contributed many famous poets, artistes and eminent persons like Thunchath Ezhuthachan, Kunjan Nambiar, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, Palakkad Mani Iyer, Palakkad Raghu, Noorani Ananthakrishna Sasthrigal, Pundit P. Gopalan Nair, Sri K.P.S. Menon, Prof. M.G.K.Menon etc.  The prominent ex-Chief Election Commissioner Sri T.N. Seshan also hails from Thirunellai Village of Palakkad.

Of late, Palakkad has carved a niche in the tourism map of Kerala.  The exotic Malampuzha Gardens with its breathtaking panoramic view has given a fillip to Tourism. A ride in the Udan Khatola - the first of its kind in South India which traverses the Garden gives an exhilarating experience.  The Fantasy Park provides ample entertainment for all.   The historic monument “Tippu’s Fort” is nestled in the heart of the town.

The economy of Palakkad was earlier revolved on its agricultural base but slowly it has advanced towards industrialization.  As far as industrialization is concerned it has now the second place in the State.  No doubt, the pace at which the growth is taking place it would lay Palakkad at the pinnacle of industrialization.

The Kanjikode-Pudussery-Walayar industrial belt on both the sides of the NH-47 from Palakkad town to Walayar in the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border is emerging as Kerala’s new investment destination.

The announcement of five major projects by the Central and State governments have once again brought a new boost to industrial activity in the area.

The Central government had announced their decision to set up an Integrated Railway Coach factory with an initial investment of Rs.6000 crore.  The State government has already located 1000 acres of land for the project at Kanjikode.

The Central government has also announced that an IIT will be sanctioned for Kerala which the State government announced will be set up in Palakkad.  The government had earlier identified 300 acres of land near Instrumentations Limited for setting up a sub-centre of the IIT, Chennai.
The Defense Minister A.K. Antony recently announced the intention to set up a Defense Park in collaboration with Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) in Kanjikode where 100 acres of land is available with them.

The work on the State government’s Kinfra Integrated Textile Park in Kanjikode is under construction in a 300-acre land.

The State government had also announced its decision to set up an IT Park in Palakkad. Some private companies are also looking for land to set up IT Parks at Kanjikode industrial belt. These major projects in the pipeline will definitely make Palakkad the new industrial investment destination of Kerala.

Already the Kanjikode industrial belt is the second biggest industrial area in Kerala after Kochi. The strategic location of the District with high literacy rate, adequate power supply, cheap land and highest road density, the availability of skilled labor and peaceful industrial climate etc., are the main reasons for Palakkad emerging as a major industrial center.

The concept of providing an integrated industrial township to entrepreneurs with single window clearance was tried in Palakkad.  The   Kinfra-Wise Park and the new Kinfra Integrated Textile Park are the examples.

The State government’s decision to promote new industrial parks under PPP will also be a boost for industrialization of Palakkad.

The Principal Secretary, Industries, Government of Kerala announced that ``If private sector is coming forward to set up industrial parks buying own land, the government will encourage them.  Most of the land under the Government agencies in the Kanjikode industrial belt had been allotted to industries.  But there was more demand for land.  This demand could be met by private sector, which had land with them in the area.  The proposal for an IT Park at Kanjikode was under consideration.’’

The proximity of Palakkad to the industrial city of Coimbatore and the textile city of Tirupur also give it added advantage.  The Coimbatore Airport is hardly 40 kms. from Palakkad.

The two International Airports of Kochi and Karipur also gives it many advantages.  The four-line NH-47 under construction from Kochi to Salem passes through the industrial belt of Palakkad.

Thus Palakkad has its strategic advantage to any other town in Kerala to become the new industrial investment destination.
